I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! While I stayed in Washington, I did enjoy the sunny, yet chilly, weather by visiting the National Portrait Gallery, Eastern Market, and hiking in Harper’s Ferry.
I’ve been subscribing to Birchbox for several months now, I’ve completely neglected to blog about any of the products I have received! For those of you who are unaware of the Birchbox premise, you pay $10 to receive a box of beauty samples each month. It’s great for beauty fans who want to try new products without committing to buying full size products and want a curated selection of products that are tailored to their beauty needs and wants. You do have to request an invite, but usually the wait is only about a month, and it’s absolutely worth it.
I can genuinely say I’ve only received two products I didn’t enjoy, an emerald green nail polish and a cream for curly hair. These were in my first month, before I realized you can adjust your settings to your personal style and preferences, and now that my account is set for someone with classic style and straight hair, I’ve only received things I like. I’ve always been a drugstore beauty kind of girl, but Birchbox is absolutely converting me. I’ve found these nicer products last far longer both in terms of staying on my face and how long the actual products lasts.
1. Dr. Jart’s Black Label Detox BB Cream I’ve tried many a BB cream and this one is above and beyond all of the others. It comes in just one shade, which I originally thought would be too dark, but it blends in perfectly. It does an amazing job of covering up any imperfections, providing a matte but refreshed complexion, and it stays put all day. Even on a hot, sunny day this BB cream held up and kept my face from looking oily. It’s a bit of a splurge, but it is 100% worth it, especially because a little tiny dot goes a long way. My tiny sample lasted well over a month, so I’m sure the full size will last me at least 6 months, if not more.
2. Benefit They’re Real Mascara When I put this mascara on in the morning, I know that it will look the same at 8 PM that it did at 8 AM. I don’t end up with flaky mascara and raccoon eyes as I always do with drugstore mascara and it keeps my lashes looking voluminous and long all day. Benefit describes lashes as being “out to there” and that’s the perfect description. While my sample from Birchbox has lasted for over a month, I will definitely keep up with this mascara after the sample runs out.
3. Sumita Velvet Eyeliner I’m usually a brown eyeliner girl. With fair skin and auburn hair, I think that black eyeliner looks a little bit harsh on me. I assumed this eyeliner would be passed along to my mom, but when my usual eyeliner broke one morning, I reached for this in a pinch. While I am still not a black eyeliner convert, I am absolutely converted to this eyeliner. It does not budge all day. There’s no smudging and I have never had to reapply when going from work to evening.
