I love the way a skinny jean looks with ballet flats. With a button-up half-tucked and cowboy boots on, I’m in my perennial uniform.
But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’ve spent enough post-dinner evenings uncomfortable in my skinny jeans that I’m willing to explore the world of a looser fit. No one likes the feeling of being out and about, wanting to enjoy the evening, but being too distracted by the constriction of a pair of jeans without enough give. It’s why we wear dresses, right?
Yet the promise of non-skinny jeans is appealing. Being comfortable and wearing jeans? Is it possible? I see people on social media going as far as wearing baggy jeans, and, y’all, we can’t go back down the road of JNCOs. Add in some rips to one of those loose pairs, and it’s even worse. But the idea of a tailored jean that’s easy to zip? That I’m willing to entertain.
My Thoughts on Millennial Jeans
I like to think most millennials abandoned the stereotypical skinny jean — or the jegging — years ago. Better yet, hopefully most of us never even dared wear a denim that flirted with 30% spandex. However, a nice structured skinny jean? That’s something I’m mostly committed to.
But I recently posted a photo of myself wearing these jeans to Instagram stories, and I immediately received an onslaught of messages from fellow millennials about these not skinny, not straight jeans. Described as “slim-straight,” these Frank & Eileen Derry Jeans are super soft and have the look of a skinny jean but with a straight, slightly cropped ankle, which I think makes all the difference. That’s what makes them feel fresh and tailored, leaving behind the painted-on jeans of yore.
I think these hit on the perfect formula for finding a millennial jean that bridges skinny with straight. They need to be soft and comfortable — otherwise why give up the true skinny jean? They need to be just a bit cropped to keep them from feeling dowdy. And the ankle needs to be straight rather than fitted, to keep them feeling tailored. When all three of those come together, you find the perfect timeless jean.
