Another Snow Day on Capitol Hill + Leaning In to Stay Put

There’s currently one day in the 10-day forecast where the temperatures could creep above freezing. And, by above, I mean 35 degrees. We’re in the depths of winter in a way that I can’t recall witnessing in my lifetime. Sure, there was the polar vortex of 2016, but I don’t remember that stretching out over weeks.

We’re truly frozen over now. For most of us, there’s little hop of getting our cars out unless we’re up for the monumental task of taking a metal shovel and an unfathomable amount of brute strength to the streets. It’s not something I’m up for personally, so unless Adam is eager to take on the task this weekend, it looks like we’re staying put. But rather than go stir crazy, I’m leaning in. We’re cooking dinner and making cocktails nightly. I’m getting a brisk walk in each evening (the cold air is invigorating!). We’re taking advantage of the restaurants that are walkable (though, let’s be honest, I prefer not to leave the neighborhood even when we’re not living through an ice age). This weekend, I plan on tackling a few decluttering projects and taking on all the things I would most certainly put off if I could go anywhere.

Capturing Another Snow Day on Capitol Hill

The other bright side of all of this is that I was able to get out and capture the snow day on camera, which is, of course, one of my favorite occasions to photograph. I have a few years of Capitol Hill snow day photos on my back pocket at this point and, since friends have been suggesting for years that I make a coffee table book of neighborhood images, I’m finally going to do something with them. Not a coffee table book, but I do plan on putting together my own album of snow day-specific photos for the basement Airbnb.

For public consumption, however, here’s a look at a few of my favorite images from last weekend. I particularly love the little boy on top of the snow mountain just out front of the east side of the Capitol. It seems like such a joyful moment during a dark time.
