The Best and Most Affordable Cotton Onesies for Little Ones

While I’m not going to share the baby on social media or here on the blog, I am happy to share the things I’m learning along the way, particularly around things you actually do need or do not need. I had no idea what I was doing when it came to ordering clothing, and, while we received so many generous hand-me-downs, I found most of them were not actually functional on a day-to-day basis (and, honestly, they probably weren’t for those who passed them down either — hence why they were still in pristine condition!).

Instead, I quickly learned about a piece of clothing called the sleep-and-play, which is just another name for a onesie that the baby literally wears all day and night. These are the coziest, comfiest items, and they’re just easy. A lot of them have two-way zippers, making diaper changes super easy, and there are so many affordable options out there that you don’t feel bad when one gets ruined (though my threshold for stains is high at this point).

Soft, Comfy, and Affordable Cotton Onesies

We’re a few months in now, and it turns out I have strong opinions on these sleep-and-plays. First, I want them to be 100% cotton. There’s no need for spandex, bamboo viscose, or any other artificial fiber. Just keep it plain old cotton. Second, a zipper is far superior to buttons. Yes, all the cute onesies have buttons, but a zipper makes life so much easier. Third, I want them to be a soft cotton material, but a stiff cotton (yes, there’s a difference!). Lastly, I don’t want to spend more than $15, ideally half that.

With all of those requirements in mind, here are the onesies that I’ve absolutely loved. Some so much that I’ve even re-purchased them in a size larger after we’ve outgrown them.

Top row (left to right): HonestBaby Green Check Onesie, Burt’s Bees Blue Clouds Onesie, HonestBaby Tartan Onesie

  • Burt’s Bees and HonestBaby have been my two favorite brands, hands down. Both run roomier and larger. Also, I think the tartan onesie doesn’t feel too holiday, and now it’s on sale!

Second row: Hudson Baby Nautical Onesie Set

Third row (left to right): Burt’s Bees Sailboat Onesie, HonestBaby Crab Onesie, Burt’s Bees Elephant Onesie

  • The sailboat onesie was one of my absolute favorites but it’s only been available in the smallest sizes. I’m hoping it comes back in stock in larger sizes before the spring!

Fourth row (left to right): Knit Sweater Romper, Burt’s Bees Rugby Stripe Onesie

  • The knit romper isn’t a onesie, but I’ve loved this. It’s so easy to button over a onesie as a warmer layer.
