A Quick Ode to the Solo Teacup (Plus, A Cabbageware Dupe!)

I’m not one to buy one-off items. There’s something that’s always bugged me about opening a cabinet and seeing a mish-mash of different prints and patterns. You won’t find me thinking it’s chic to have mismatched china or a coffee bar full of quirky mugs. Perhaps it was years of living in group houses in DC (which, I did not realize until listening to this podcast, is apparently a DC phenomenon that doesn’t have the same rite-of-passage appeal in other cities?!). I hated opening the cabinets to a jumble of dishes and mugs. It offended my Type A senses.

So, now, as a real adult, I only buy matching sets. If I love a mug, I need eight of it. And I need to get rid of my old set to keep things minimal-ish.

But, when I spotted this cabbageware teacup and saucer…I bought just one.

I waffled on it for a bit, but decided there’s a specific joy in having something that is delightful to use but also not needing to have a complete set. Every afternoon, I’ve been making my tea in this darling teacup, and I love it. It’s such a moment, and I don’t need to worry about whether I have enough to serve tea to a group over brunch. I can have this one odd duck in the cabinet, and that’s totally fine.

Though, no promises, I might go back for a second, just so I have a set when I invite a friend for coffee on the balcony.

A Cabbageware Dupe That I Couldn’t Resist

I’ve been sick for basically the past week and a half, but, on one of the days where I was feeling okay, I did venture to Target to try to restock my house into normalcy. While I was there getting toilet paper and cleaning supplies, I happened to spot this stoneware cabbageware dupe. Y’all know I love cabbageware. Bring on the 1960s. And seeing this darling little teacup and saucer? I couldn’t possibly pass it up! It’s just $7, and so, so cute.

There’s also a matching teapot if you want the full look. I passed on it since the entire point of getting just one is to limit more stuff, but, if you plan on hosting a spring brunch or love having a friend over for afternoon tea, then this is the look.

And, if you really want to go crazy, there are also salad plates (too on the nose, perhaps?). Honestly, I would have gotten them except I already have feather salad plates…and I really don’t need lettuce, too (or do I get rid of the feathers in lieu of the lettuce…). At $4 each, they do seem like a no-brainer…
