I got back in the figurative saddle recently with a mini press trip out to Middleburg to learn more about a new Virginia bourbon distillery crafting 1787 Provenance Bourbon. I’ve had to turn down every invite that’s landed in my inbox this fall, but, when I saw an opportunity for a trip out to hunt country that would only peel me away from home for a day, I was in. Bourbon, Middleburg, and a gorgeous fall day? Seriously, say no more.
The entire experience was just as delightful as I’d hoped. We couldn’t have asked for a better November day, and the setting that surrounds Provenance Estate is Virginia countryside perfection. Funny enough, we actually looked at a house just down the street from here when I had visions of moving west, but, somehow, I missed this grand old home, perhaps because it’s ever so slightly hidden down a long, tree-lined driveway (the dream right?).
Virginia Bourbon at Provenance Estate in Middleburg
Built in the 1850s, Provenance Estate is a stately Georgian that today is home to 1787 Provenance Bourbon, crafted by Middleburg Barrel Company. The young distillery is currently focused on its namesake product, but, where they shine is in their barrel pick experience, which lets people come out, taste around the bourbons (the flavor profile is different depending on where in the rick house it lives!), then choose their signature bottle. We were able to get a literal taste of what this experience is like while mingling with both the owner and the distiller, both of whom were warm, welcoming characters. It was a fascinating afternoon, and one I’d recommend to anyone.
