I’d like to consider myself an evangelist for ceiling fans that aren’t dated or ugly. I love the feeling of a ceiling fan at night — the breeze, the white noise. It’s a must for a good night’s sleep. But there’s a fine line between choosing a ceiling fan that simply takes a backseat design-wise in the room (as it should!) and one that immediately hits people as a decor faux-pas in a space. It’s too easy to go so wrong.
Ceiling Fans Get a Bad Rap
Unfortunately, ceiling fans usually get a reputation that’s akin to boob lights. People immediately think of these ceiling fans — the ones with three hanging lights and five blades. They’re the ones that are always dusty, always rattling, and decidedly un-chic.
But, when I posted an Instagram reel recently talking about attractive ceiling fans, I received several DMs and comments asking for more details on the fan in our bedroom. Clearly the appetite is there — people want to know there are better fans out there. They just have no idea where to find them (spoiler: it’s as easy as Amazon).

8 Ceiling Fans That Aren’t Dated or Ugly
If you’re looking for ceiling fans that aren’t dated or ugly, then Minka-Aire is the go-to brand. This is the fan we have in both our bedroom and our upstairs guest room. We’ve also used this Minka-Aire fan before, in our condo. I’m a big fan of the style of both. They’re modern without making too much of a statement. The three blades is key.
And, to address one burning fan question — do you opt for one with a light or without? I tend to lean away from overhead lights, and we did not choose fans with lights in our bedrooms in the rowhouse. In our bedroom, I’ve been totally fine with that decision. In our guest room, we haven’t furnished or decorated the room, so the jury is still out. In the ideal scenario, if you choose a fan without a light, you’ll have another light on a switch that you can turn on as soon as you walk in the room.
